About the Artist

Where do I start?

“While others measure their lives in hours, I measure mine in brushstrokes—each one a quiet act of defiance against a world that settles for the ordinary. I don’t chase greatness; I refine it, layer by layer, until even perfection feels unfinished.”

Mari Davey is a Detroit-area artist whose work reflects a thoughtful blend of technical precision and expressive creativity. With a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from Wayne State University, her background informs a keen attention to detail that is especially evident in her figurative realism oil paintings. Her artistic practice is grounded in observation and structure, yet she embraces the freedom of mixed media to explore texture, depth, and emotion in ways that extend beyond traditional techniques.
Over the years, Davey has built a diverse portfolio that spans gallery exhibitions, commissioned works, and community engagement. Her pieces have been featured in juried exhibitions, including shows in Detroit and Livonia, and she has contributed numerous commissioned artworks to private collections throughout Metro Detroit. In addition to her studio work, she has shared her passion for art by tutoring young students, helping cultivate creativity and foundational skills in the next generation of artists.

“Art isn’t what I do—it’s the air I permit myself to breathe. Everything else is merely interruption. If that sounds indulgent, so be it; the canvas has never once asked me to be humble, only honest.”

Davey’s creative voice is further enriched by her experience in photography and her professional background in education and communication. Whether working in oil paint or incorporating mixed media elements, she approaches each piece with curiosity and intention. Her work captures the human form and spirit while inviting viewers to engage with layered compositions that reflect both personal expression and a deep appreciation for craft.
